About this deal

In June 2002 Jacqueline was given an OBE for services to literacy in schools, and she was the Children’s Laureate from 2005-2007. The author's style of writing is very open and honest and this allows the reader to understand how each character feels at every stage. She appears traumatised when she and her parents move away to Scotland, having been parted from Gemma. Lessons are present, but few and not that well learned except that a badly behaved girl can walk all over everyone. I recommend this book to middle school age readers since it may teach you a lesson to let go and move on with your life if you are stuck at a certain spot and don't know how to move on.

The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award. I am a huge spoiler so I want to tell you many things I know I shouldn't--but that would spoil the fun, wouldn't it? This book "best friends" is a delightful and fun story full of new complications at every turn of a page. Luckily her grandad decided to take Gemma on a road trip where the girls were reunited but Gemma met Flora Alices new friend, the eventful meet ended with a funny incident with a cake! In the message in Alice's birthday card to Gemma at the end of the book, it is mentioned that the dynamics have changed between Alice and Flora - Alice was having a birthday party and her mum had made her ask Flora, however Alice didn't like her much now (presumably following Gemma's visit). In the book Karen Barlow is married to Bob and the move to Scotland was due to Bob getting a new job. I think that the author wrote this book to show that anyone can get over things that could be major or minor. Despite their differences, the two girls spend almost every day together, and on their birthdays they always wish to stay friends forever.

Throughout the book, the author makes the reader feel just how distressing it must have been for the two best friends after they learned of their forced separation. Gemma thinks they will be best friends forever but when Gemma finds out that Alice is moving to Scotland, will the two be best friends forever?Nothing can ever break them apart, but when Gemma sneaks a peek in Alice's Diary their friendship may be crushed. In this moving book, Jacqueline Wilson captures the power and intensity of girls’ first friendships with startling precision.

When Alice's mother gives Flora the knife instead, Gemma finally snaps and shoves the cake in Flora's face. The characters - other than Biscuits and grandad, I found the characters unlikeable and hard to put up with. It was lovely to read this one to my daughter and reminisce, but also to see how different it seemed to me reading now as an adult. Their dissimilarity in personality and physical appearance is what fuels their friendship and makes them compatible in that, what one lacks in, the other makes up for and vice versa.

This get-away was short lived when they were spotted and as a result was in trouble with each of their parents. There is a happy ending though, with Gemma becoming good friends with Biscuits and Alice sending Gemma her charm bracelet as a sign that they will be best friends forever.Having found a new friend, Alice invites Gemma to stay only for Gemma to throw a cake in the face of the new friend because she does not like her. Jacqueline Wilson is the author of almost one hundred books, including Candyfloss , available in paperback from Square Fish. this book is about two best friends that if you ever saw them you would think that they were sisters. It doesn't matter that Gemma loves soccer while Alice prefers drawing, or that Gemma is always getting into trouble while Alice is a model student and daughter.
