But why is the person who is responsible for capturing her so alluring? This YA action adventure love story is non-stop action as Jet fights to save a sacred mountain in Japan. [young adult, ages 10 and up]As a writer, I strive to create stories that I wish I had found on shelves when I was younger. In that same way, every title on this list not only brings new ways to find adventures through reading, but will hopefully leave young readers with new skills to face the world around them. We often think just cause a story has fantastical elements that it makes them detached from reality, but give any of these a read and you'll find, the farther it is from real life, the brighter the common themes we all share shine through. Follow a trio of friends as they learn the secrets of being a Ninja from two of Japan's most stealthy real Ninjas. As a kid, I had a tough time finding books with characters who looked like me after moving from Taiwan to America. That’s usually bad for most kids. However, I was a hideously self-absorbed kid. Having to read about characters who didn’t look or live like me made my childhood infinitely richer. Since becoming an author, I’ve written books that draw from my heritage and lectured about East Asian storytelling at various universities and writing programs. I do this as a love letter to my own heritage but also as a thank you letter to America for sharing its culture with me. Here’s a bit of mine in return. Social normalisation is the process by which behaviors or beliefs become accepted and considered as “normal” within a particular social group, such as your class. This can occur through various means, such as repeated exposure to high expectations, social reinforcement from peers or teachers, and a desire to conform to group norms. This book isn’t specifically based on Ninjutsu but is also focused on Samurai culture in general. As Ninjutsu borrows from the Samurai, this book is a nod to the culture and behavior that Ninja’s would live by. In brief, it shows the moral code of ethics on how to live a stoic life and the principles used to do so. Hagakure also looks at ‘Bushido’ which translates to the ‘Way of the warrior’. Whilst this doesn’t have many practical, training techniques – it is still nonetheless a fascinating read. Even if you’re not into Ninjutsu or martial arts at all, Hagakure is fun to go through.
