About this deal

You’ll need to take out several enemies, all while dodging the gas bombs from one of the cannon-wielding guys from the Urn Witch’s Laboratory. Their signature gin has dominant notes of fennel, and works wonderfully in gin and tonics and cocktails alike.

If you missed this going through the first time, you’ll want to head to the Urn Witch’s Inner Furnace door and go south, past the entrance where she was holding Pothead captive. It drinks very hot by itself, but in a cocktail its herbal character shines right through (in fact, one member of our tasting panel had it in an arugula gimlet at Milwaukee’s Odd Duck last month), making it a perfect gin for a bitter drink like a negroni. The flavor profile is traditional and juniper-forward, with notes of honey and pink peppercorn, and it tastes great in a martini. After you grab the bomb ability in the Hall of Doors, there are two unlit lanterns near the path back to the main part of the hall. At the point where you are in the center of a room with three horned platforms, there is a fourth platform to the north. In the Estate of the Urn Witch (the garden part, not inside the Ceramic Manor), there is a set of fire pits. They’ve only been around for a little over a year, but they’ve already shaken up the spirits world by releasing a variety of seasonal gins, a barrel-aged absinthe and a competitor for Jeppson’s Malort. It seems to lead to a dead end, but if you fire an arrow through the stone arch, it will reveal a bridge that will lead you to the shrine. This path leads you to a slippery challenge that requires you to quickly hookshot anchors while activating platforms.

If you only get one bottle of Midwestern gin for your home bar, make it one of these versatile gins. When you get off the lift, walk north around the structure, and the camera will rotate, showing another path. Created on Washington Island, Wisconsin and made using juniper berries that grow wild with coriander and fennel sourced from within the state. DEATH’S DOOR GIN Death's Door Gin has a surprisingly simple botanical mix of juniper berries, coriander and fennel.

The first magic shrine you can access is in the Estate of the Urn Witch (again, in the garden area).

Their Knickerbocker gin, while not a favorite of our panel when tasted straight, was at the very top of the list when mixed – so much so that we decided it was worth including at the very top. Three botanicals burst through: First juniper berries followed by spicy and citrusy notes from coriander seeds, finishing with a cool softness of fennel seeds. The Hall of Doors and Grove of Spirits have five different Shiny things: the Ancient Door Scale Model, Modern Door Scale Model, Rusty Belltower Key, Surveillance Device, and Makeshift Soul Key. And the Journeyman Bilberry Black Hearts Barrel-Aged Gin easily topped FEW's barrel-aged gin in a side-by-side test, since it's richer and rounder. While it's not the firewater that Watershed and Farmer's are, each FEW gin we tried had an overwhelming corn smell and taste—it makes sense, given that it's made with a white whiskey base.

In the Overgrown Ruins, head south from the Village Settlement until you see a break in the wall railing that allows you to jump down. Sold in a distinctive rectangular green bottle, this has been one of our favorite gins for years, and blind tasting bore out our hometown bias. However, there’s a cut in the hedges that allows you to travel through the bushes to the bricked off part of the map.The Surveillance Device is in the Hall of Doors beyond a cracked wall that you’ll need to blast open with a bomb spell. After weeks of work, we’ve emerged from the cocktail laboratory with some answers—and some surprises. Death’s Door can be hard to the low amount of vitality and magic you can have at once, but you can gain more of both by finding shrines. Comments during tasting included “tastes like turpentine,”“adding vermouth just makes this stuff worse” and “burns with little flavor.
